Music

What Does Music Mean To Me?

There are 2 things that identify us as human – across all cultures, in all parts of the world: laughter and music. You can argue for more and I’ll let you, but these 2 stand out for me.

I believe that music should not be only a spectator sport, in fact it is not a sport at all. I avoid discussions of who is the best performer, what are the top 50 songs, etc. Music is about how you feel when you hear it – or when you make it. Everyone should be encouraged to make music – sing, play an instrument, whatever their level of proficiency. It’s just good for the soul.

I am sad that our culture encourages an elitist attitude towards music where many people confine their involvement with music to just listening to those who are considered “real musicians” and are embarrassed to sing or play a tune of their own. As anyone who has children can attest, the joy one gets from hearing music often has little connection to the technical proficiency of the one performing it. I’m sure my parents got countless hours of enjoyment when I would pull out the pots and pans to form a makeshift drum set when I was a child ;)
